About Algorithmics@NUS

The purpose of this site is to serve as an online repository of information for the growing community of students who are passionate about solving algorithmic problems. Two of the major international competitions in this area are the IOI and ACM ICPC. Singapore has participated in every IOI since 1992 while NUS has participated in the ACM ICPC since 2000.

About the IOI

The IOI is the premier world wide high school informatics (computer science) competition. Students write programs to solve challenging problems. The first IOI was held in Bulgaria in 1989. It was proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and is one of five academic Olympiads for high school students throughout the world.

The goals of the IOI are to bring together, challenge, and give recognition to young students from around the world who are the most talented in informatics (computer science), and to foster friendship among these students from diverse cultures.

About the ACM ICPC

The ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) traces its roots to a competition held at Texas A&M in 1970 hosted by the Alpha Chapter of the UPE Computer Science Honor Society. The idea quickly gained popularity within the United States and Canada as an innovative initiative to assist in the development of top students in the emerging field of computer science. Headquartered at Baylor University since 1989, the contest has expanded into a global network of universities hosting regional competitions that advance teams to the World Finals

The contest fosters creativity, teamwork, and innovation in building new software programs, and enables students to test their ability to perform under pressure. Quite simply, it is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious programming contest in the world.
